The Foundation
The Pinacoteca Benedicto Calixto Foundation, established under Law No. 154 of May 28, 1986, has been
managed since 2003 by an association of friends of the Pinacoteca Benedicto Calixto. The institution
is named Benedicto Calixto after the painter who spent so much time portraying and studying Santos
and the region.
Its aim is to disseminate and stimulate artistic production in general, especially the plastic arts; to
gather, classify, catalog and conveniently exhibit plastic works considered to be of a high aesthetic
level and representative of their time; to conserve and restore works of art; to promote studies and
research related to the defense of the plastic arts in the municipality of Santos; to maintain permanent
cultural services and activities, constituting a dynamic center for the study of the arts in general in
the municipality of Santos.
Currently, the art collection has 227 canvases, of which 127 are by Armando Sendin, 62 by Benedicto Calixto, 01 by Pedro Alexandrino, 02 by A. Fernandes, 02 by Sizenando Calixto, 01 by Angelo Cantú, 01 by Salvador Rodrigues Jr, 02 by Atayde Mestieri Chammas, 01 by Gilberto Winter, 01 by Accindino Andrade, 01 by Niobe Xandó, 01 by Percy Lau, among other artists, as well as 51 ceramics by Armando Sendin.
The collection also includes personal and painting objects by Armando Sendin and Benedicto Calixto, such as paint boxes, brushes, photographs, etc.
Currently, the foundation is presenting the long-term exhibition “De Cada Janela...” (From Each Window...), inaugurated in 1992, made up of 62 works by Calixto, which explore various themes throughout the painter's career. It also promotes temporary exhibitions by renowned national and international artists, as well as musical, literary and theatrical events, and courses, lectures and meetings focused on art.
The institution is considered a municipal public entity by Law No. 1,478 of March 25, 1996, a state public entity by Law No. 16,343 published on December 30, 2016 and a federal public entity by Federal Law D.O.U., Ordinance No. 1,610 of September 23, 2014.
To promote the educational role of art and culture from a perspective of human and social development, supporting, disseminating and hosting artistic and cultural events in its facilities.
