Arte na Pinacoteca

Arte na Pinacoteca - 2nd edition
Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes.
Art is knowing which ones to keep.
- Scott Adams
The exhibition "Five Artists From Santos" which the Benedicto Calixto Art Museum Foundation offers the public presents a significant sample of the quality and enchantment generated by the works of Erica Gropp, Luciana Futuro, Miriam Alvim, Sara Bittante and Suzi Carvalho.
An intimate and essentially human process, creation is bom not from immediate enlightenment or unattainable perfection, but from a journey of discovery where eventual mistakes constitute steps that enrich and confirm the path taken.
What makes the creative experience truly art is the discernment of the artist, who, observing the chaos of possibilities, carefully chooses what to keep.
The artist, then, is an alchemist who, in an act of vulnerability and wisdom, makes room for intuition to flourish into fearless courage and reveal unprecedented paths, as a reflection of the soul itself.
I am art. I am the drawing's line, the turns of words,
the melody of the song that Time writes and sings.
- Luana Camargo
The tive artists from Santos that we have the privilege of appreciating here boast a solid curriculum featuring important national and international events and various awards that attest to the success of their careers.
For this exhibition, each of them contributed art works characteristic of their journey, where the creator's personal mark shines.
The illuminated and colorful works that characterize Erica Gropp's oeuvre resonate with a vibrant and open artistic personality.
lt is not by chance that assemblages predominate in her most recent phases, where sometimes rare technique additions such as ceramics, wood and basting are presente on the same canvas, in a fruitful dialogue with contemporary art.
Erica's playful spirit, also present in caiçara culture, however, sometimes masks the difficulties that also leave a mark on ali of us, that we inherit as scars basted in our hearts.
Luciana Futuro structures and develops her works from drawings, in the sense of the artistic design she intends.
Her work bears a striking visual identity, but one can perceive that each of her series harbors a certain complex of postures and feelings that almost suggest the action of another artistic persona.
Thus incorporated, Luciana articulates the painting elements through a gaze imbued with her own feelings and configurations, as can be convincingly seen, for example, in the canvases Children and Soccer and Me and Him.
Perpetually studious, multi-artist Miriam Alvim navigated in her consecrated career through various forms of expression such as classical ballet, rhythmic gymnastics, drawing, watercolors and oil painting.
Her high-quality painting managed to transform itself from the classical style to French impressionism through a courageous deconstruction of light, today her most marked feature. Urban scenes, nature portraits and historical notations are some of the plastic contributions that Miriam has been turning out and now presents in this selection of memorable Santos landscapes.
The city of Santos is home to the largest and most important port in Latin America and yet, due to climate change, the region's natural systems suffer from decay, including the mangroves, a key element in the environmental equation that distresses us.
What could be done, and how to do something to solve this problem? Perhaps one of the answers to this citizen challenge fies in Sara Bittante's effective response: With art!
May the emotion aroused by the intimacy of Sara's images - a living, complex and radiant mangrove -lead us to a new awareness and foreshadow the indispensable commitment to revert it to its original functionality.
Artist Suzi Carvalho shows an unequivocal vocation for space, working in plastic language with fundamental concepts such as volume, structure, matter and balance.
A vocation verifiable even in two-dimensional works such as the paintings Vertex and Prism, where the execution of the female portrait and the ballerina follow a logic of sidereal exploration through competent chromatic and luminous modeling.
ln truly spatial works, Suzi sets up a game where the plasmatic body comes to life with each breath, and unfolds in thought-provoking solutions, like characters who present themselves among successive and unfolding supports.
Carlos Zibel and Antonio Carlos Cavalcanti Filho, curators.
THE ARTISTS
Erica Gropp
Erica Gropp, bom in Santos, has developed a very active artistic career whereby she has succeeded in establishing her style.
Her painter's eyes, trained since at least 1982 when she graduated in Fine Arts from Puc University - Campinas, interpret the world through the vision of a child - her alter ego - who always sees the happiness and beauty of life in vibrant colors and elevated tonalities, no matter what the event, the time or the place.
Undergoing several phases, shaped in relation to the techniques she chooses to deepen, such as drawing, woodcut, metal engraving, painting, ceramics, collage and assemblage, Erica manages to suggest more criticai or painful facets.
Notably in the Covid-19 phase, the artist introduces truck tarpaulin as a painting support, elaborating an eventual paraphrase on the antagonistic situation of personal lockdown and the necessary transportation of subsistence items.
As a result of this experience, the canvases that receive her consecrated parasols also begin to harbor basting, like the marks that life imprints on souls.

Luciana Futuro
Santos artist Luciana Futuro has developed a fruitful career with numerous national and international events in her curriculum. With a very personal visual style based on graphic structures that follow design-based thinking, as a form of intention, the artist proposes an intriguing series of paintings. Masterfully using the technique of acrylic painting on canvas, Luciana approaches a given series' dominant theme through a strategy that places her into the skin, and in the mind, of a hypothetical character of the painting itself.
Note, for example, how in the work Children and Soccer the visual field that she proposes dispenses with the use of Euclidean perspective, which in Western adult thinking creates hierarchies and informs about distance, importance and other forms of rational knowledge, and exchanges it for a space totally structured by emotion and childish involvement in a spontaneous game, where distance and perspective matter very little ... Undoubtedly, it is this rare strategic and artistic capability found in ali her other series that confer to the artist a personal and non-transferable visual trademark.

Miriam Alvim
"The artist never stops studying, because painting is for life". (Miriam Alvim).
Visual artist and a resident of Santos, Miriam Alvim is widely recognized for her contributions in the field of painting, especially in watercolor and oil paintings.
Between the 1970s and early 1990s, she developed superlative work in the teaching of classical ballet and rhythmic gymnastics. As artistic director, choreographer, set designer and costume designer, she has presented numerous shows at the Coliseu Theater and the Braz Cubas Municipal Theater in Santos.
However, drawing and painting have been present in her life since childhood: her first works in pasteis and oils date from 1960 and 1961, respectively. ln 1993 she took up painting again with renewed force, as a self-taught artist, and in 1995 obtained her first award at the V Roberto Bernardi Plastic Arts Salon, in ltanhaém, São Paulo State, with the work Sobrado Imperial (Imperial house), a 40x50 cm oil on canvas.
ln 1996, Miriam Alvim began taking classes with Ludemar Vítor, an impressionist painter and watercolorist, and came in contact with watercolor technique. From then on, numerous awards followed. Miriam Alvim's trajectory was marked by a signiftcant artistic rupture when her academic style was gradually deconstructed: The brush strokes becoming more loose, the contours fading and, above all, the light effects becoming an intrinsic part of her striking artistic personality, as it stands today.
An elegant figurative painting style where forms are built by light, more specifically, by the contrast between light and dark, which translates into a plastic identity in constant dialogue with the traditions of the French impressionist movement.

Sara Bittante
Artist Sara Bittante, who lives and works in Santos, studied drawing, painting, woodcut, collage and modeling with paper and plaste, at the Carlos Gomes Education lnstitute in Campinas from 7962 to 1965, gaining a solid artistic background along with the experience and learning attained in the studios of Ataíde Lopes (1916) and Ida Richer (2008-2019).
Sara furthered her studies in various places, including as an audit student in the Art History Postgraduate Program at the Armando Álvares Penteado Foundation in São Paulo, the Clinic for Artists with curator Renato de Cara in 2024, and Education for visual artists - Casa Tato 5, in 2022. The current series "Submerged Universe: Mangrove" is part of the artist's production, its particularity being the theme directly linked to the historical context and the resulting sociocultural environment that overlays and interferes both with the conception of the problem and the visual and ideological construction of her recent works. This chaflenging contingency demands greater depth and dedication from the artist which, in the case of the works exhibited here, clearly meet such demands and have the potential to nurture, at least in part, the continuity of her career.
These are immersive canvases. The limpid colors of the sea and the vigorous shapes of the mangroves denote life and incessant movement as inseparable plastic partners of the positive and engaging visual message, whereby the viewer becomes a participant in sustainable thinking: the ocean we want.

Suzi Carvalho
Artist Suzi Carvalho, with a degree in Visual and Performing Arts, post-graduation in Fine Arts and an academic career as professor of Visual Arts at São Judas Tadeu College, participates in the collective exhibition 5 Artists From Santos at the Benedicto Calixto Art Museum Foundation. The artist presents five works, which, in a way, sum up her main dispositifs, in the sense of Michel Foucault: Two large paintings in acrylic and three medium sculptures, one on a wall one on a pedestal and one on a hanger.
With an imagery anchored in the elaboration of the body as a life drive, Suzi Carvalho creates forms in her own languages, which in space generate continuous plasmas with undulations and changing directions and, on the plane, manifest themselves through chromatic light charged with an expansive power, as if aspiring to fill the exhibition environment itselt
